Indigenous to almost all of Europe, with the exception of the far north, the plant was introduced to North America. In anthroposophical medicine, it is used as a cardiac stimulant (see PDR for Herbal Medicines, 2nd ed., p.678).

Henbane is found throughout Central and Southern Europe and in Western Asia, extending to India and Siberia. As a weed of cultivation it now grows also in North America and Brazil. It is frequently found on chalky ground and particularly near the sea.
